Fleece is a synthetic substitute for wool. It's just a generic term used to denote warm, soft fabrics worn in winter. Fleece is often used to make the lining of clothes and can even be used as a stand-alone fabric.
There are indeed many varieties of fleece, depending on the material from which it is made and the unique properties they possess. Polar fleece is a type of fleece, and probably the most common.
When a product is only labeled as being made of "fleece", the garment is most likely made of polar fleece. Although not technically the same, they are often used as synonyms in colloquial usage.
Types of fleece fabric
When you hear fleece, the first thought that may come to your mind may be sheep's fleece, but when it comes to fabrics, fleece is artificial soft fleece fabric.
Although it mimics the softness and warmth of fur, it is made with chemicals mixed together to provide the desired fleece quality.

It is a fleece bonded to another fabric as a lining, or it could mean bonding two layers of fleece together for a double effect. Bonded fleece can be seen in the lining of jackets and plaid shirts.
4) Cotton fleece
As the name suggests, it is fleece made of cotton.
5) French terry fleece
It is a very thin, stretchy, and breathable fleece that can be worn in winter and summer. It is used to make casual wear, t-shirts, shirts, hoodies, etc.
6) Microfleece
It is the thinnest and lightest fleece and is not as insulating. Therefore, it is used in sportswear, bathrobes, etc.
7) Plush fleece
It is the super-soft, fluffy, and luxurious wool used to make thick blankets.
8) Polar fleece
Polar fleece is the most popular and durable fleece commonly used in the apparel industry.
9) Polyester fleece
Polyester fleece is made of polyester and is used in gloves, hats, jackets, scarves, and more.
10) Sherpa fleece
This type of fleece is very similar in appearance and texture to sheep's wool.
11) Spandex/Lycra
This is a stretch fleece specially designed to create fitted garments.
