What is Rib Knit Fabric?

Rib knit is a variation of jersey that is made in a very similar way to plain weave. The basic structure follows the same pattern of weft yarns above and below the warp yarns, in a one-to-one pattern.

The difference between plain weave and rib weave is that the rib weave uses a heavyweight yarn. This is used for the warp of the weft, and the end result is a fabric with raised ribs horizontally or vertically on the fabric, depending on whether the heavier, thicker yarn is used for the warp or weft.

Ribbed fabrics can be woven into striped or checked fabrics in color. This is done by using different yarns of different colors. Finishes can also be applied to ribbed fabrics. These include waterproof and fireproof coatings.

Types of ribbed fabrics include grosgrain and poplin. Poplin is traditionally made using silk warp threads and wool or worsted weft threads. Today, however, it is made of silk, cotton, viscose, and wool. Cotton poplin is made entirely of cotton and is versatile.
